Panchakarma: A 5,000 year old Ayurvedic practice of detoxification, transformation, and rejuvenation.

Over the course of five days and under the care of skilled practitioners, our Panchakarma  therapy includes a cleansing diet, three to four hours of daily luxurious Ayurvedic body therapies, meditation, mantra, as well as the reintroduction of lifestyle habits that induce natural circadian rhythms. Panchakarma can be performed as an annual spring or fall cleanse to promote health and longevity, or as a way of targeting a present undesired condition of the body or mind.   This essential Ayurvedic practice beautifully promotes a long, graceful health span.

As a sister science to Yoga, Ayurvedic medicine is an important part of the path to self-realization.  Our personalized Panchakarma programs are designed to awaken and restore your mind and body’s innate healing intelligence, and to deeply nourish your inner Soma, the nectar of vitality & immortality.

Why Panchakarma?

In Eastern medical philosophy, the entire cosmos is an interplay of the five elements—Space, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth.  Ayurveda divides these into three elemental combinations, called doshas, that are present in everyone and everything:  

Vata = air + space

Pitta = fire + water

Kapha = earth + water 

In a healthy & balanced individual, the doshas exist within the body and mind in the right amount and in the right place.  A number of factors can disturb the doshas and affect the digestive fire, or agni.  These include:

  • Environment

  • Dietary and lifestyle habits

  • Aging

  • Seasonal changes

  • Technological overstimulation

  • Irregular circadian rhythms

  • Emotions & relationships

  • Improper use of our intelligence and attachment to sensory objects

  • Changes of the Sun, Moon, and planets

The disturbance of doshas and a compromised agni cause a buildup of toxins, or ama, that further stress the body and mind and begin to cause the symptoms of disease.  Our lymphatic system is designed to remove ama from the body, but tends to become congested—especially during seasonal transitions. 

Modern science has found that aging of the immune system—immune senescence—is a key underlying cause of symptoms of aging, including infectious diseases, cancer, chronic inflammatory disorders and autoimmune disorders.  Many modern humans have overburdened immune systems, due to a variety of factors, all of which prevent the body from entering rest & repair states.

Our Panchakarma program directly targets the lymphatic and immune systems, and supports your body’s self-repair mechanisms to help prevent the symptoms of systemic aging. 

We believe Panchakarma to be an essential annual health practice for the modern human.  Panchakarma is a sophisticated science of removing ama from the body, detoxifying lymphatic fluid, balancing doshas and agni, nourishing all the tissues of the body, and rejuvenating body, mind and spirit.

Our Approach to Panchakarma

We perform classical Ayurveda and Panchakarma therapy that is informed by functional medicine, modern science, and traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine. 

During your five-day stay with us, you will receive daily Ayurvedic consultations with our practitioners, as well as a comprehensive PK program customized to your constitution and current state of wellness.  

We provide a series of treatments that help eliminate toxins from your body and mind, in a space with reduced sensory stimulation, including unnatural light.  Studies have shown that even 48 hours without unnatural light dramatically regulates circadian rhythms.  We encourage you to leave your screens off for the duration of your stay.  Circadian disruption has wide-ranging physiological and cognitive consequences, and interferes with the detoxification and rejuvenation processes.   


A Look At Our Panchakarma Retreat

  • A detailed 15-day Purvakarma (pre-cleanse) program that you perform at home before your stay with us. This includes the necessary customized herbal products.

  • Daily body therapies lasting three to four hours, including abhyanga (two-therapist massage), shirodhara, nasya, karna purana (ear oiling), and svedana (herbal sweat). Additional therapies will be tailored to the clients’ needs, and may include udhulana (herbal application to whole body), dough basti, virechan, enema, rakta moksha, gentle acupuncture, cranial sacral therapy, sound bathing, yoga therapy, and counseling.

  • Freshly-cooked organic meals of a classical mono-diet, herbal teas, and clean water.

  • Daily check-ins with our practitioners, as well as Vedic counseling sessions with Heather.

  • Daily guided meditation & yoga nidra.

  • Guided hatha yoga therapy to help with the relaxation & detoxification processes. Private yoga therapy sessions are available for an additional fee.

  • Ample space & time for rest & quietude.

  • A 15-day Rasayana program (post-close program). Rasayana is the science of immunity & longevity. This personalized rejuvenation plan ensures that you receive the greatest benefit from your stay with us, and is considered even more important than your cleanse.

Soma Mountain currently holds retreats in Paonia, Colorado, and Joshua Tree, California.  As our work can be mobile, we are also able to hold retreats in other beautiful, natural and quiet locations.  Please contact us for more details, or if you have ideas for collaboration. 


Accommodations  

We provide a clean, simple space, and beautiful natural surroundings.  We prefer to have you stay on-site, but we do have a list of nearby Airbnb accommodations.   



Our clinic does not claim to provide cure for disease, although profound healing can take place over the course of these fully-supported, deep Ayurvedic cleanses.  It is our intention that each client achieves a higher state of self-awareness and well-being.  Participants may experience improvement in digestive health, a strengthened immune system, reduced stress, deep relaxation, better quality sleep, mental clarity, more vitality, and lightness of being.  After treatment, participants will return home with a detailed rejuvenation plan to help them bring new healthy habits into their lifestyle.
